About A-1 Small Engines
On July 1st 1985 Scott Steadham and Coy Stone opened A-1 Small Engines. The tiny small engine shop that could. It was located in a 1040 square foot building. At that time A-1 Small Engines primarily played a supporting role in the logging and pulpwood industry. As technology advanced the need for chainsaws in the southeast as a major tool declined. In the day to day logging operation mechanized equipment took over.
A-1 Small Engines then changed gears and looked to offer more products for the commercial tree service, landscape, and that the homeowner could benefit from. As time passed, A-1 Small Engines grew, the need for more lines of equipment became necessary such as, Stihl and Scag . Eventually other fine lines were expanded or added.
In 1995 A-1 Small Engines expanded the facility by adding a new service area, which more than doubled its size. Little did we know, we were prepared just in time for hurricanes Erin and Opal. We were able to support and service all of the customers that came through the door, even with the damage that we sustained.
In 1996 Coy Stone decided it was time to retire and spend some time with family. He did so (Partially). Scott Steadham then purchased his part of the company. Scott, along with family and staff then took the reigns and continued growing A-1 Small Engines, with new and exciting products. In 2002 the land next to Harvesters Federal Credit Union was purchased with a new store in mind.
Construction was set to begin in 2004, but Hurricane Ivan came through the gulf coast. This was a set back but we were again, able to take care of thousands of our great customers. In November of 2005 construction began on the current facility. In July of 2006 we opened the doors of our dual purpose facility. Our building, nearly 13000 square feet, is located on 2 acres of land located at 700 Hwy 29 South in Cantonment. It now houses A-1 Small Engines and it's sister company A-1 Accessories.
As the ten year cycle of growth continued once again A-1 Small Engines expanded to the Pace community and in December 2016 opened a brand new facility to better serve the area.
